How did people of the early modern period conceive of the ocean: a vast, unpredictable, dangerous, and hostile place? How is the sea transformed into an image of the monstrous, a force that must be confronted and battled?
Center Librarian, Jeff Goodhind, will showcase images and episodes from the Center's 1634 edition of Orlando Furioso and open onto a conversation about monstrous seas. In preparation for discussion, we invite participants to bring their favorite examples of sea monsters in fiction from the Renaissance to today.
